Colon hydrotherapy is referred to as colonic irrigation, colonics and colon therapy. These all refer to the treatment of safe, filtered, temperature controlled water cleansing you internally, in your large intestine. At the beginning of the treatment a small, sterile, disposable rectal tube or speculum is inserted into the anus. By means of this speculum warm, filtered water can enter into the colon; waste and faecal matter can be removed and flushed out. This treatment is used predominately as a preventative measure and as a detox. Some people discover that colonics can assist in overcoming symptoms of constipation, diarrhoea, gas, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, stress, poor diet, headaches, back pain, migraines, haemorrhoids, parasites, skin conditions, colitis, arthritis, diverticulosis, depression, irregular bowel movements and allergies.
Most people remark on how light and clean they feel. Increased energy and feelings of well-being are common responses.
No, the insertion of the speculum into the rectum is not painful. During the treatment you may feel waves of nausea as you are detoxing. Impacted faecal matter in the colon may also cause mild contractions and cramping as the waste is being dislodged and expelled. Once the major impaction has been removed, many people find the session to be quite pleasant and relaxing.
No. Our professional standards ensure that your dignity and privacy is maintained at all times during the treatment. You will be covered by a towel at all times.
The colon is the last 1.5metres of the digestive tract. It is a hollow tube like organ made up of muscle that moves digested food along by a wave like motion known as peristaltic action. The colon is the living area for a host of bacteria that produce vitamins, such as K and some B vitamins. The colon also absorbs water, nutrients, proteins and cell salts back into the blood stream. Interesting fact, the colon also produces and stores 95% of your bodies serotonin, the happy hormone!
You may feel energised after a treatment and you may also feel weary or relaxed after a treatment. This is simply your body detoxing and processing through its cleaning period; therefore proper rest is very important for your body to rejuvenate. It is important to drink plenty of liquids (water, juices, herbal teas and electrolytes), avoid raw vegetables for 24hrs (steamed vegetables are sufficient) and chew thoroughly. Avoid spicy foods for a few days after.
It may be more comfortable to refrain from eating at least two hours before your scheduled appointment. For best results drink plenty of water.
Your therapist will leave the room for you to get ready. You will be asked to remove everything from the waist down, including your underwear, you may leave your top half on. You will begin by lying on the table on your side, covered by a towel. After the insertion, you will turn over to lay on your back for the treatment to begin. The entire session you will be covered by a towel. You may wear what ever you feel comfortable in, keeping in mind you can leave your shirt on throughout the treatment.
The usual colon hydrotherapy session lasts between 25-45mins. A small speculum is inserted into the patients rectum, this has one small inlet tube of running water and an outlet tube attached to the machine. Session times are booked for an hour, allowing plenty of time for you to use the toilet at the end of the session for as long as you need.

A contraindication is when colon hydrotherapy should NOT be considered. People with certain medical conditions should NOT undergo colon hydrotherapy unless given written approval by their doctor. These conditions include the following:
> ABDOMINAL HERNIA or HIATUS HERNIA: When you have been diagnosed with abdominal hernia or have had surgery for an abdominal hernia within 3 months. Having a colonic with a hiatus hernia puts too much pressure on the organs in the chest cavity.
> ABDOMINAL SURGERY: After recent abdominal surgery. A minimum of 12 weeks should pass after surgery. Examples: Caesarean, Appendix, Hysterectomy, Hernia operation Rectal surgery: Haemorrhoidectomy, Cancer of the Colon
> ABNORMAL DISTENSION/MASSES If you have been diagnosed with an abnormal colon.
> ACUTE LIVER FAILURE: If you have been diagnosed with acute liver failure. Doing the colonic would put stress on the liver.
> ANAEMIA: If you have been diagnosed with severe anaemia. This condition weakens an individual. The colonic would put stress on an already weakened system.
> ANEURYSM: Absolutely no colonic.
> CARCINOMA: Carcinoma of the colon, kidney or bladder (walls are weakened). In other areas of the body it would be ok.
> CARDIAC CONDITION: If you have had cardiac surgery or have been diagnosed with a heart condition such as uncontrolled hypertension or congestive heart failure.
> CHROHN’S DISEASE: An inflammatory disease of the intestines that may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from anus to mouth.
> COLITIS: Inflammation of the lining of the colon, (when the disease is in a "flared up" state avoid colonics).
> DIALYSIS PATIENTS: A colonic would put a lot of stress on the kidneys.
> DIVERTICULITIS: A condition where small pouches (diverticuli) are inflamed, (only when in a "flared up" state, ok to proceed if under control).
> FISSURES/FISTULAS: An anal fissure is a tear in the skin of the anal canal. An anal fistula is an inflammatory tract between the anal canal and skin. A colonic would put pressure on this area.
> HEMORRHAGING: Bright red discharge of blood from the anal canal.
> HEMORRHOIDECTOMY: Operation to remove haemorrhoids. No treatment within 3months.
> INTESTINAL PERFORATION: If you have previously been diagnosed to have intestinal perforation.
> PREGNANCY
> RENAL INSUFFICIENCIES: (kidney failure) Colonics are not recommended as they put too much pressure on the kidneys.
> ABORTION OR MISCARRIAGE: You need to wait at least 6 months after an abortion and 4 months after a miscarriage.
> MEDICATION CONCERNS: If a doctor has ever diagnosed you with any intestinal conditions, or if you have been on any medications which may weaken your intestinal walls (such as steroid drugs), you should obtain a doctor’s release. If you are currently taking any medication for any condition diagnosed by a doctor you should check to ensure the medication will not be interfered with by the additional water intake and absorption
We recommend 3 sessions close together, within a week or 10 day window for best results. This will help to dislodge old, compacted matter and give you the quickest form of detox. Spacing treatments out will have the same benefit but take longer to detoxify.
Once you have completed 3 colonics in a short space of time, you will only need another one when your body tells you so. This may be through a digestive issue, or mental health issue or perhaps after a course of anti-biotics. General maintenance visits are different for everybody, some may come monthly, for others every 6-12months. You can't have too many treatments.
